Writing and Reading

Creative Writing in the Workplace

In this short workshop (two lunch hours over two weeks), attendees use work experiences to construct short creative writing pieces. Some examples include haikus about annoying coworkers, vignettes about the daily grind, and emails turned into poetry.

War, Genocide, and Survival: A Graphic Novel Reading Group

I co-teach this workshop with my husband. We use classic graphic novels like Spiegelman's Maus and Keiji Nakazawa's Barefoot Gen, along with more recent ones. Some possibilies include Sacco's Palestine, Stassen's Deogratias, and Sacco's Safe Area Gorazde. This is a great reading workshop for people who are learning to read, learning to like reading, and non-native English readers. We hope to design and teach similar graphic novel reading workshops with different themes.

Telling our Stories: A Zine-Making Workshop

This is a six-week (meeting once per week) identity workshop in which attendees begin to share and write the stories of their lives and eventually turn those writings into short zines.
